Is the American Bulldog Kennel Club (UK) Recognized?
The American Bulldog is not recognized by The Kennel Club of Great Britain.
About The Kennel Club
Founded in 1873, The Kennel Club is the oldest kennel club in the world. It sets breed standards and governs dog shows across the United Kingdom. Despite its long history and broad breed list, the American Bulldog has never been granted recognition.
American Bulldogs and UK Law
An important distinction: the American Bulldog is not subject to UK Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). When the XL Bully was added to the Dangerous Dogs Act in 2023, the American Bulldog was not included. The two breeds are distinct, and American Bulldog owners in England, Scotland, and Wales are not affected by XL Bully restrictions.
UK Registry Options
The UK Bully Kennel Club (UKBKC) fills the gap left by The Kennel Club's lack of recognition. UK American Bulldog owners can also register with:
- UKBKC -- headquartered in Harrogate, North Yorkshire
- ABRA -- American Bulldog Registry and Archive
- UKC -- United Kennel Club
- EBKC -- European Bully Kennel Club
The UK American Bulldog Community
The United Kingdom has a significant American Bulldog population across England, Scotland, and Wales. UK breeders are active in conformation, obedience, and working events through the UKBKC and other organizations.
