Is the American Bulldog Canadian Kennel Club Recognized?
The American Bulldog is not recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC).
About the CKC
The Canadian Kennel Club was founded in 1888 and is Canada's primary purebred dog registry. It recognizes hundreds of breeds, but the American Bulldog is not among them.
The American Bulldog is not alone in this. Other established breeds like the Dogo Argentino and the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog are also not recognized by the CKC.
Canadian Roots in the AB Community
ABRA -- the American Bulldog Registry and Archive -- was founded by Lesli Rose of Harvey, New Brunswick. Canada has a strong American Bulldog community stretching across every province, and Canadian breeders have been part of the breed's story for decades.
Registry Options for Canadian Owners
Canadian American Bulldog owners have several registry options:
- ABRA -- founded in Canada, with 43,000+ pedigree records
- ABA -- American Bulldog Association, accepts Canadian dogs
- UKC -- United Kennel Club, accepts Canadian dogs
- NKC -- National Kennel Club
Will CKC Recognition Happen?
CKC recognition may eventually follow AKC recognition if the American Bulldog achieves full AKC status. For now, the breed is well served by dedicated registries that understand American Bulldog bloodlines and history.
