Puppy Development Stages
Understanding puppy development stages helps breeders and owners make the most of each critical period. American Bulldogs develop physically and mentally through predictable stages from birth to full maturity at around 2 to 3 years of age.
Birth to 12 Weeks (Breeder Period)
- Neonatal (0-2 weeks) - Puppies are blind and deaf. They sleep and nurse. The breeder begins Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) exercises from day 3 to day 16.
- Transitional (2-3 weeks) - Eyes and ears open. Puppies begin to walk and interact with littermates. First teeth emerge.
- Socialization (3-12 weeks) - The most critical period. Puppies learn bite inhibition from littermates. Introduce new surfaces, sounds, people, and gentle handling. This window shapes temperament for life.
12 Weeks to 6 Months (New Owner Period)
Puppies go to new homes around 8 to 10 weeks. This period is about continued socialization, basic obedience, and housetraining. Expose the puppy to as many new experiences as possible while keeping interactions positive. Begin formal obedience training with short, fun sessions.
Teething occurs between 4 and 6 months. Provide appropriate chew toys and redirect destructive chewing.
6 Months to 2 Years (Adolescence)
The teenage phase. American Bulldogs may test boundaries, become more assertive, and temporarily forget their training. Stay consistent with rules and training. Do not give up on socialization. This is also when many dogs go through a fear period, showing sudden nervousness about things that never bothered them before. Handle fear periods with patience, not force.
Physical growth continues throughout this stage. Avoid high-impact exercise until the growth plates close (typically 14 to 18 months for American Bulldogs).
