American Bulldog Canine Good Citizen
The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is one of the most valuable certifications an American Bulldog owner can pursue. In a world where bully breeds face unfair discrimination, a CGC title proves that your dog is well-mannered, well-trained, and a positive ambassador for the breed.
Many landlords, insurance companies, and housing communities accept CGC certification as proof of a well-behaved dog. For American Bulldog owners, this can make the difference between keeping your dog and losing your home.
The 10 CGC Test Items
- Accepting a friendly stranger
- Sitting politely for petting
- Appearance and grooming
- Walking on a loose leash
- Walking through a crowd
- Sit, down, and stay on command
- Coming when called
- Reaction to another dog
- Reaction to distractions
- Supervised separation from handler
Preparing Your American Bulldog
Start with basic obedience classes as a puppy. Socialize your dog extensively with people, other dogs, and novel environments. Practice each CGC test item individually before attempting the full test. Most American Bulldogs can be ready for the CGC test between 12 and 18 months of age.
The most challenging items for American Bulldogs are typically the reaction to another dog and the supervised separation. Work on these areas consistently with positive reinforcement training.
Beyond CGC
After earning CGC, consider pursuing the AKC Community Canine (CGCA) title, which tests the same skills in real-world settings. Therapy dog organizations also often require CGC as a prerequisite for therapy dog certification.
